Navigating the Space

Sometimes as a photographer or creator when shooting for the first time in a new and unfamiliar space, you’re pressed for time to find the "right angles." For our second journal post, we explore how to navigate the space and make use of Casa Bona’s décor to maximize the subject's presence. We used a 35mm lens for the wider shots and a 100mm lens for the close-up shots – all photographed with natural light.

The Classical Portrait

Photographed in the morning, we used the west-most-facing window directly in front of Taylor as our main light and a partially pulled-up shade of an east-facing window as our fill light.

Hazy Days

Photographed at noon on a gloomy day, all windows were open to fill the scene with soft and diffused light.

Dealing with Lines

As there are many lines in this corner of the space, finding a small patch of simple background did the trick. We lit the scene with two fully open windows and a third window’s shade partially pulled-up.

The Cinematic Look

Photographed within an hour before a cloudy sunset, we only used the mezzanine window to light the scene. The rest of the window shades were pulled down. And the orange glow in the background came from the light fixture in the dining area.
